Sonic Youth’s sophomore album Bad Moon Rising is a vastly haunting experience, and it can actually be quite the disconcerting listen to the untrained ear. The lyrical topics cover a broad range: obsession, insanity, Charles Manson, colonial America; but at no point does the album seem thematically disjointed.

Album Rating: Death Valley 69 is the worst song here other than Justice is Might (if we have to count that). Thurston chalks up some big points for I'm Insane and Society is a Hole (and World is Red on Confusion), but Kim is at the top of her game here.

Reissue of the album. Tracks 9 to 12 are bonus tracks on the CD version. Tracks 1 to 9 were recorded and mixed at Before Christ Studios, Brooklyn, N.Y.C. between Sept. and Dec. Tracks 10, 11 were recorded and mixed at Radio Tokyo, Venice, California in January /5(49).

There's no Creedence Clearwater Revival in sight, and there's more attention to the crafting of an album.
